Becton, Dickinson and Company has named Ferass Abuzaina as Worldwide President of its Surgery business unit, with the appointment taking effect immediately. He will lead the global strategic, operational and commercial performance of the Surgery business and report to Peter Menziuso, Executive Vice President and President of BD’s Interventional segment.
The choice signals continuity in a segment BD says is positioned for its next chapter of growth. Rather than bringing in an outside executive, the company promoted a leader already embedded in the unit’s operating model and product pipeline.
The Leadership Move
Abuzaina previously served as Worldwide VP/GM, Advanced Repair and Reconstruction, within Surgery. BD said that since joining the company in 2013, he has held leadership roles across multiple BD businesses, with experience spanning research and development, strategy and business development.
That background is commercially relevant for a medtech business where execution is not only about product design, but also about how pipeline decisions, portfolio management and go-to-market operations connect. BD said Abuzaina has played an important role in advancing Surgery’s innovation pipeline, commercial excellence and operational performance.
Menziuso said the Surgery business is well-positioned for its next chapter of growth and described Abuzaina as the right leader to build on that momentum. He added that Abuzaina combines understanding of the business with a commitment to innovation, execution and serving customers.
Why It Matters
On the facts available, this is not a restructuring story or a strategy overhaul. It is an internal succession move that suggests BD wants operational familiarity at the top of Surgery while continuing to emphasize innovation and commercial execution.
For medtech companies, that kind of appointment can matter because mature business units often depend less on abrupt strategic reinvention than on consistent performance across product development, sales channels and global operations. BD’s framing of the role reflects that balance.
Abuzaina’s academic training also aligns with the technical and managerial blend the position demands. He earned a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering, as well as a Master of Business Administration from the University of Connecticut School of Business.
The immediate signal is straightforward: BD is betting that a leader developed inside the Surgery organization can convert existing momentum into the next phase of operating and commercial performance.
