Lundbeck is relocating its U.S. headquarters from Deerfield, Illinois, to Greater Boston, where it says it will create a global innovation hub tied to the next phase of its strategy. The company said the move should help it scale its neuroscience portfolio, build out its artificial intelligence capabilities and expand innovation opportunities.

The decision links a corporate footprint change to a more specialized R&D direction. CEO Charl van Zyl said Lundbeck has been moving toward indications where it believes it understands the biology of neuroscience more clearly, creating what he described as a “neurospecialty” focus rather than a purely psychiatric one.

Why Boston

Lundbeck said Greater Boston offers a dense mix of academic and healthcare institutions, biotechs, technology and AI firms, plus a strong scientific talent pool. The relocation also brings its main U.S. operations closer to its existing presence in nearby Cambridge.

The company did not disclose financial details for the new headquarters or specify what it will do with the Deerfield site. It said the transition will take place over the next year and that it aims to retain the people, expertise and capabilities behind its recent performance while continuing to serve patients and partners without disruption.

The Strategic Context

The move comes as Lundbeck is posting growth from marketed products and looking for more sources of innovation. Over the first half of 2026, the company reported sales growth of 16%, driven by products including migraine preventive Vyepti and Otsuka-partnered Rexulti, which is approved for major depressive disorder, schizophrenia and agitation from Alzheimer’s disease dementia.

Van Zyl recently told Fierce that Vyepti could reach peak U.S. sales of $1.1 billion, with additional opportunity in Europe and possible market openings next year in China, Japan and South Korea. He also said Lundbeck expects to be acquisitive, with external and internal innovation and business development both part of the plan.

That makes the Boston move more than a real estate decision. It places Lundbeck closer to a cluster where neuroscience science, AI capability and deal flow are concentrated, as the company tries to translate current commercial momentum into a broader pipeline and partnership engine.
